SECURITY OFFICER JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Purpose Statement

The job of Security Officer was established for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional process with specific responsibilities for identifying potential welfare, safety and/or student security, personnel, visitor and/or site problems; maintaining safety at school sites by enforcing disciplinary policies and regulations; communicating information and responding to inquires; and providing emergency care to students and other individuals.

 

This job reports to Safety and Security Director

 

Essential Functions

Administers first aid to students, staff and/or visitors (e.g. medical incidents, fight injuries, etc.) for the purpose of providing immediate emergency medical care.

Arrests individuals engaging in illegal activities (e.g. individuals breaking into buildings, physical disputes ) for the purpose of apprehending suspects to prevent further illegal activities.

Collaborates with community agencies (e.g. law enforcement, courts, health care, etc.) for the purpose of taking action regarding investigations and criminal activities.

Communicates safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff and visitors for the purpose of ensuring their understanding of such information and the potential consequences of violation.

Escorts students, assigned personnel and/or visitors (e.g. between facilities and to and from home, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring personal and site security.

Investigates potential campus crimes and/or student related community incidents for the purpose of resolving conflicts, taking appropriate action, and/or referring to outside agency for resolution.

Monitors student behavior during and between assigned periods and at student events (e.g. sports activities and other district events) for the purpose of ensuring student compliance with established guidelines, regulatory requirements, maintaining a safe and positive learning environment, and secure facility.

Patrols school facilities (e.g. grounds, roads, buildings, adjacent areas, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of providing visibility, maintaining security, and deterring criminal activities.

Prepares a variety of documents (e.g. incident reports, activity logs, procedures, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.

Presents information in a variety of settings (e.g. classrooms, parent meetings, staff orientations) for the purpose of informing individuals of campus security guidelines, and law enforcement procedures and/or individual rights.

Provides traffic and parking control (e.g. designs traffic patterns for district buildings) for the purpose of maintaining efficient traffic flow and use of parking lot/s.

Responds to a variety of situations (e.g. accidents, injuries, vandalism, suspicious activities, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking the appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns.

Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources regarding campus security issues for the purpose of providing information, direction and/or referral for addressing inquiry.

• Testifies in court proceedings for the purpose of providing information regarding alleged illegal activity.

 

Other Functions

Participates in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.

• Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

 

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

 

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: administering first aid and CPR; handling hazardous materials; operating standard office equipment; law enforcement experience; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and utilizing pertinent software applications.

 

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: pertinent codes, regulations & laws; safety practices and procedures; and techniques for diffusing hostile situations.

 

ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of varied types and/or purposes; and utilize job-related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform

the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups including those suspected of unlawful activities; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; maintaining confidentiality; and working with frequent interruptions. Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services.

 

Responsibility

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and some fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 15% sitting, 85% walking, and % standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes.

 

Working Environment

Physical demands include restraining students, arresting individuals, handling emergency response situations. Environmental Conditions include performing duties in all types of inclement weather (since they perform only about 15% of their jobs riding in patrol vehicles and secure facilities by walking around and through them).

 

Experience Job related experience within specialized field is required.

Education  Targeted job related education that meets organization’s prerequisite requirements.

Equivalency State certification, state jurisdiction, class E drivers license, law enforcement experience, continuing education of 48 hours every 3 years
