Purpose Statement

The job of Manager of Grounds is done for the purpose/s of supervising grounds services and activities; overseeing assigned personnel; and scheduling work assignments within established timeframes and standards.

 

This job reports to Director of Facilities and Grounds

 

Essential Functions

  • Coordinates a variety of items (e.g. daily schedules, groundwater conservation, mowing schedules, snow removal schedule, training of new personnel, etc.) for the purpose of meeting district requirements.
  • Evaluates district property each year for the purpose of determining improvements needed to maintain a quality learning environment.
  • Inspects district playgrounds and landscape areas for the purpose of ensuring that staff performance is meeting established standards for proper maintenance and care.
  • Manages programs for sports fields and common grounds (e.g. turf program, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the department functions in a safe and efficient manner and meets district requirements.
  • Monitors fund balances of assigned programs and related financial activity for the purpose of ensuring that allocations are accurate, related revenues are generated, expenses are within budget limits and/or fiscal practices are followed.
  • Oversees contractors doing work in the district for the purpose of ensuring quality work that meets specs.
  • Prepares written materials (e.g. reports, memos, letters, procedures, manuals, spray records, turf program reports, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
  • Procures equipment, supplies and materials for the purpose of maintaining availability of required items and completing jobs efficiently.
  • Recommends policies, procedures and/or actions for the purpose of providing direction for meeting the district's goals and objectives.
  • Responds to emergencies 24 hours a day for the purpose of determining and implementing appropriate actions required to resolve situation.
  • Reviews plans, specifications and cost estimates, etc. for the purpose of advising school organizations on purchases of landscape material, equipment, fencing, and playground equipment.
  • Supervises department functions (e.g. hiring/termination recommendations, planning/scheduling/coordinating activities, training, advising, consulting/evaluating/supervising subordinate personnel, snow removal operations, equipment operations, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the department functions in a safe and efficient manner.

Other Functions

  • Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

 

SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: handling hazardous material; supervising personnel; equipment maintenance; developing bids; and managing vendors.

 

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: know MSHSAA requirements for sports sites; and chemical application.

 

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; collate data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: organizing and coordinating staff and tasks; delegation; motivating others; prioritizing work; and cooperating with other managers and district coaches.

 

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized routines; directing other persons within a small work unit; monitoring budget expenditures. utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization’s services.

 

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 50% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

 

Experience: Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
