Safety Monitor

 

The job of Safety Monitor is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional process with specific responsibilities for identifying potential welfare, safety and/or student security, staff, visitor, and/or site problems; maintaining safety at school sites by enforcing disciplinary policies and regulations; communicating information and responding to inquiries; and providing emergency care to students and other individuals.

This job reports to the Director of Safety & Security.

Essential Functions

 Administers first aid to students, staff and/or visitors (e.g. medical incidents, fight injuries, etc.) for the purpose of providing immediate emergency medical care.

 

 Attends work on a regular and predictable basis for the purpose of providing students and staff with high quality service and a safe environment.

 

 Communicates safety and security policies as well as enforcement procedures to students, staff, and visitors for the purpose of ensuring their understanding of such information and the potential consequences of violation.

 

 Confers with teachers and other staff for the purpose of assisting in evaluating student behavior and/or making referrals.

 

 Delivers messages to students and teachers throughout the building for the purpose of communicating information between parents, students, and staff.

 

 Demonstrates methods required to perform classroom and/or subject specific assignments for the purpose of providing an effective program that addresses individual student needs or requirements.

 

 Demonstrates knowledge and operation of security system cameras for the purpose of ensuring the security of students, parents and staff.

 

 Escorts students, assigned staff and/or visitors (e.g. between facilities, buildings, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring student, staff and overall site security.

 

 Interacts consistently with students for the purpose of educating students.

 

 Monitors student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.

 

 Monitors student behavior during and between assigned periods and at student events (e.g. sporting activities, tournaments, and other district events, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring student compliance with established guidelines, regulatory requirements, maintaining a safe and positive learning environment, and secure facility.

 

 Participates and responds as a crisis team member for the purpose of ensuring the safety of students, parents and staff.

 

 Patrols school facilitites (e.g. grounds, roads, buildings, adjacent areas, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of providing visibility, maintaining security, and deterring criminal activities.

 

 Prepares a variety of documents (e.g. incident reports, activity logs, procedures, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.

 

 Provides traffic and parking control, such as designing traffic patterns for district buildings, for the purpose of maintaining efficient traffic flow and use of parking lots.

 

 Responds to inquiries regarding campus security issues from a variety of sources (e.g. parents, teachers, administrators, office staff, etc.) for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information, direction, and/or referral for addressing the inquiry.

 

 Responds to a variety of situations (e.g. accidents, injuries, vandalism, suspicious activities, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking the appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns.

 

 Responds to potential campus crimes and/or student related community incidents for the purpose of resolving conflicts, taking appropriate action, initiating a police response, and/or referring to outside agency for resolution.

 

 Testifies in court proceedings for the purpose of providing information regarding alleged illegal activities.

 

Other Functions

 Acts as substitute teacher as assigned for the purpose of providing student supervision.

 

 Participates in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job duties.

 

 Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

 

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: preparing and maintaining accurate records; operating standard office equipment; and utilizing pertinent software applications.

 

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: English grammar/punctuation/ spelling/vocabulary; and telephone etiquette.

 

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather and/or collate data; and use basic, job- related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: maintaining confidentiality; adapting to changing priorities; working with frequent interruptions; communicating with diverse groups; and displaying tact and courtesy.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from

 

other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization’s services.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, 40% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Equivalency:         Associate's degree preferred.
